The first snow fall

First snow fall

a story

“Please come to the rink tomorrow morning, 6 am, I can get some hot coffee for you, and afterward, we can have some breakfast there”. His eyes under his bushy well-defined eyebrows were shining more than the glazed globes of light defining the boundaries between the mall road and the Ridge.

6 am!! It was already quite late in the evening, and by the time I reached home, it would be like 9, and in the morning to get back here, to see him skating in this icy cold weather at 6, meant, I would have to get up quite early, then standing in that freezing cold place, in the visitors’ gallery, though, he had promised hot coffee, spending my precious winter morning this way, na, no, that would be such a waste, I thought.

But, I wasn’t sure how to say it, so I left it there saying, “I can’t promise, I’ll try”.

“Oh, that’s great, as promises always get broken, so it is better to try, as efforts are sometimes successful!”

It was a dialogue from a film, I think, but he delivered it quite earnestly! And I was impressed. Oh, he used to be quite a reserved person, so this had surprised me a bit.

After spending a few years away, in another city, I had come back to this town, meanwhile, he had finished his degree, and was already working, and seemed to be a bit more confident, and sure of himself. I liked that.

We had recently reconnected, after more than five years, and in between so much had changed. I had changed for starts, no more a teenager, silly and idyllic, who talked about stars, clouds, moon, heard and saw things which didn’t exist, or things which no one understood, or even saw, but I did, for example, an invisible ‘voh’, or ‘that’ an imaginary being that keeps jumping from one person to another, looking for a resting place, and while doing so it takes the emotions of that person to the next or something like this.

Yes, the last time when we were here, we had talked of those silly things, or there were things that we had not talked about, for example, those romantic thoughts, that I knew, he always harboured, but, from which we had moved away, as so much had happened in the last five years, to me, and am sure to him too, but it seemed he had not forgotten.

When I got home, I had already made up my mind, as later in the day I had two of my classes, and one of the term papers had been troubling me, and I justified that, it had to be submitted in two days.

I decided not to go, so that I could sleep in, that I go to the library at 10, and work a bit on it.

I woke up early, even though, I had not planned to and looked outside, it was overcast, oh that means there will not be any skating today, I was relieved. And then I thought of his disappointment. Knowing him, the way how he took things, I was sure, he would still come to the rink.

Without even realising, I was getting ready, and finally putting on my big jacket, and a scarf, I left and almost ran towards the rink. It was eerily quiet, no wind, no thunder, and no birds even, it was quite early, but everything was as if closed, waiting for some signal.

I reached the ridge and that’s when I felt the first flurry of snow, my first snow after five years, and in spite of myself, I was exhilarated, oh, how I had missed this weather, this snow! Snow always used to make me so happy, when we were children, as just like magic dust, which in contrast to the rain, worked quietly overnight, covering everything, turning everything white, and turning the world into a fairyland. Yes, that was the time when I had believed in fairies, princesses, and a prince charming!

And that’s when through the foggy winter morning light, I saw him, walking towards me, he was covered in snow, and even before he reached my side, he shouted, There is no skating today, but,” he lifted up the flask, “I brought you some coffee!”
